MAHE and Mangalore University Sign MoU to Enhance Healthcare through Gamma Irradiation of Bone Allografts

Udupi : In a significant step towards advancing medical research and healthcare technology, Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE) and Mangalore University have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). This collaboration is focused on establishing a systematic framework for gamma irradiation of bone allograft materials, which will play a pivotal role in supporting the operations of the newly founded Bone Bank at Kasturba Medical College & Hospital, Manipal.

As per the MoU, MAHE will carry out routine gamma irradiation of these bone allografts at the Centre for Application of Radiation and Radioisotope Technology (CARRT), in partnership with Mangalore University. This procedure is critical for eliminating pathogens and ensuring the highest quality standards for the donated tissues.

During the signing ceremony at Mangalore University, Vice Chancellor, Professor P.L. Dharma, expressed his appreciation for MAHE’s dedication to research and innovation in healthcare. He emphasised the importance of this collaboration and encouraged further partnerships between Mangalore University and MAHE in the future.

Dr P. Giridhar Kini, Registrar, MAHE, highlighted that the establishment of the Bone Bank at KMC, Manipal, addresses a pressing need for safe and effective bone grafts. He explained that gamma irradiation is a crucial process that ensures the removal of potential pathogens, guaranteeing the safety and quality of the allografts. He stressed MAHE’s commitment to ethical practices in tissue donation and transplantation, ensuring that the Bone Bank not only meets the demand for bone grafts but also promotes responsible and transparent donation practices.

Shri K. Raju Mogaveera, Registrar, Mangalore University, underscored the shared commitment between the two institutions to improving healthcare in the region. He noted that the Bone Bank will serve as a critical resource for various surgical procedures, ensuring that healthcare providers have access to safe and high-quality bone grafts.

Dr Harish Kumar S, Director of Corporate Relations, MAHE, shed light on the various initiatives undertaken by MAHE under Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) funding, aimed at promoting social welfare. He remarked, “Our CSR initiatives are focused on addressing pressing healthcare needs in the community. The establishment of the Bone Bank is a testament to our efforts to enhance healthcare and promote social wellbeing.”

Dr Monappa Naik A, Professor at KMC, Manipal, elaborated on the role of the Bone Bank in improving patient care at Kasturba Medical College. He explained, “The Bone Bank will significantly improve the availability of safe and effective bone grafts, which are vital for a range of surgical procedures, thereby enhancing treatment options for patients.”

In his welcoming address, Prof. Karunakara Naregundi of Mangalore University extended a warm welcome to the MAHE delegates. He provided an insightful overview of the collaboration, highlighting how this partnership will contribute to the betterment of social health on both sides.
The signing ceremony was attended by key officials, including Dr H. Devendrappa, Registrar Evaluation, along with Deans and administrative staff of Mangalore University.
